What to include on an electrical invoice

License number
Your electrical contractor license number, which many states require on invoices and contracts.
Scope of work
What was installed, replaced, or repaired, and where in the building.
Labor and materials
Separate lines for labor and for panels, breakers, wire, and devices.
Permits and inspections
Permit and inspection fees on their own line so the customer sees what the city charged.
Deposit and balance
On larger jobs, show the deposit collected and the balance due.
Terms and warranty
Due date, how you accept payment, and your workmanship warranty.

Tips for getting electrical invoices paid faster

  • Note code items you corrected (missing GFCI, double-tapped breakers) so the customer understands work they did not ask for.
  • Keep the permit fee as a pass-through line — it is not your markup, and showing it avoids price pushback.
  • Take a deposit on panel upgrades, EV charger installs, and rewires to cover equipment before you order it.
  • Put the inspection date or pass in the notes when you close out the job.

Frequently asked questions

What should an electrical invoice include?
Your business name, contact details, and license number; the customer and job address; an invoice number and dates; the scope of work; labor and materials on separate lines; permit and inspection fees; any deposit and balance; tax where it applies; the total due; and your payment terms and warranty.
How do electricians bill for materials?
Most list materials as their own lines at cost plus a markup that covers ordering, pickup, and warranty handling. The markup and margin calculator shows what a given markup does to your margin.
Is this invoice template really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and nothing to install. The generator runs entirely in your browser — the details you type are not sent to or saved on our servers. Fill it in, then download or print it as many times as you like.
How do I save the invoice as a PDF?
Click “Download / print PDF”. Your browser’s print window opens with only the invoice on the page; choose “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”) as the destination to save a file you can email or text to your customer.
Can my customer pay the invoice by card?
A PDF invoice can only ask for payment — your customer still has to mail a check or find another way to pay. With a free Redbud Way account you can send the invoice with a card pay link instead, optionally collect a deposit first, and the money is paid out to your bank about two days after the customer pays. Redbud Way charges a 0% platform fee; standard Stripe card processing fees apply.
